I can remember the good ole days of cutting weight during wrestling season. Trying to weigh the same weight as you did 6 months early is not always easy a teenager. Because most wrestlers do it, it makes you have to do it as well. Otherwise you could end up on the mat with a guy who is 15 pounds heavier than you. It is not hard to drop 7-8 pounds in a hour or so when you start shedding water.
In bodybuilding we did a similar tactic but starting swaeting hard 2-3 months before hand to keep the water off and 4-5 days before a contest you start drinking water by the gallon and keep your sodium low. This will actually cause your body to expel water and give you a leaner look. It was not done in bodybuilding to reduce you overall weight in most cases. Bodybuilders typically do not care what the weigh on contest day but how lean they look. Now occasionally you will be a few pounds heavier than a lower weight class so dropping a few pounds to go 1 weight class lower makes sense.
What we typically use to cut wieght was a sauna suit. Which is a garment made from waterproof fabric designed to make the wearer sweat. A sauna suit are typically made of PVC or coated nylon cloth. The construction is typically in the style of a waterproof sweat suit, consisting of a pullover jacket and drawstring pants. The closures at waist, neck, wrists and ankles are all elasticated to help retain body heat and moisture within the garment. In some sauna suits, the jacket also includes a hood to provide additional retention of body heat.
Sauna suits are usually worn during physical exercise as an aid to weight loss, as I mentioned by wrestlers, bodybuilders, boxers, or MMA fighters who wish to qualify for a specific weight class. The body temperature elevation and the sweating induced by wearing the suit cause a rapid loss in body weight by loss of water. You need to be aware of the dehydration effect. Sauna suits should be used with great caution, especially if you are dropping 10 pounds of water. That is about a gallon and a half of water loss and you run the risk of dehydration. The body temperature elevation and water loss while wearing a sauna suit can lead to the possibility of heat stroke and loss of motor function or heart attack because of the imbalance of electrolytes, and in extreme cases causing death. Thus, a sauna suit should not be worn while doing extreme exercise or in hot conditions. A sauna suit is not intended for use in a dry or steam suana, but I have personally done it on many occassions to loss 5 pounds in about 1/2 hour. Do not try this yourself as you can pass out and kill yourself in a suana just to make weight..
Some clothing suppliers assert that the use of a sauna suit accelerates weight loss in exercise by an increase in metabolic rate and calorie burning. Others disagree, and indicate that the only significant effect is temporary water loss that is immediately reversed by subsequent drinking of water. A possible effect of wearing a sauna suit is that it may provide an encouragement to do physical exercise. The increase in body heat from wearing a sauna suit gives the impression of getting a good workout. Here are my anncedotal thoughts. It takes energy to cool yourself. YOur body burns glucose for quick energy and fat for sustained energy. So /I feel that your body burns fat while wearing a sauna suit. Plus is rids your body of sodium and a lot of it from the subcutaneous layer. This sodium is no longer there to store water and the fat cell shrinks. Continually ridding yourself of water and keeping fat cells from reaching the maximum genetic size keep them from splitting and becoming new fat cells. So wearing a suana suit while working out on a regular basis keeps you leaner. That is my opinion and I’m 50 years old and have a 8 pack, so there you go.
Sauna Suits For Body wrapping
Sauna suits are also worn for body wrapping in some health spas. The wearer is first wrapped in bandages saturated with mineral and/or herbal preparations and then covered with a sauna suit. The objective of this process is to enable the wearer to “sweat out toxins”. Sauna suits are often worn specifically for such sweat excretion rather for exercise or weight loss. I like this for several reasons. 1 sweating is natural, and is good to help clean your pores. 2 it helps you lose weight. 3 it rids you body of sodium and other toxins, and the mineral spirits will help soften your skin.
Sauna Suits For Psoriasis treatment
A medical use for a sauna suit is in the treatment of psoriasis, an inflammation of the skin causing itchiness and discomfort. The symptoms of psoriasis can be relieved by use of ointments and by keeping the skin moist. The wearing of a sauna suit helps to retain skin moisture and to prevent the ointment from leaking out and staining other clothing. I have never used this before as I do not have psoriasis, but as mentioned before this type of treatment is good for your skin.
So as you can see a good sauna suit is a good tool to has in your athletic and weight loss arsenal.
