Even if you’ve only been training a few months, finishing a 5K (3.1 mile) run is an ambitious but very satisfying goal. The key is to be patient during the training phase and not bite off more than your body can chew, and combine walking and running as you build toward the event itself.
One thing to keep in mind is to protect your ego and not worry about what place you come in, because we at LIVE know that most people in their entire lives will never even get to the starting line of a 5k race, let alone finish. When you cross that finish line, put those arms up and celebrate like you are finishing the Olympic marathon!
One of the most important things to think about is your fitness base: you will have wanted to do regular aerobic exercise three times a week at a minimum for a period of a month before you start the training for the event. We have 5k training programs here at LIVE specifically for the event
You can combine running and walking for your training and actually expect great results. One key is to make sure that you are combining strength training, specifically core and stability training, with your distance workouts. Being out on the road can take its toll on the body, and a strong core keeps you bouncing back for more.
It’s also important to have a great pair of running shoes that are purchased preferably at a running specialty shop, where they can fit you perfectly for a pair of shoes that match your stride and mechanics.
