The Xercise Ball is most commonly referred to as a stability ball. It is a large, inflatable but very durable ball that is designed to hold the exerciser’s body weight while it is being used for any number of potential movements. Abdominal exercises, weight lifting, core training and sports performance are all possible to work effectively on a stability ball.
The concept of the stability ball is relatively simple. A large ball that is durable enough to hold a person’s body weight while they exercise (even if they are holding additional weight) becomes a replacement for the weight bench or chair that might normally be used to perform an exercise. Because the ball is round and flexible, it is inherantly much more unstable to sit or lay on than a solid bench. As a result, much more muscle is used by the person exercising to simply hold still than would be used traditionally and a better workout is achieved.
All of the muscles of the core (abdominals and lower back) are involved no matter what exercise is being performed. For example, a bicep curl with dumbells is done while sitting on the ball. Though the bicep muscles of the upper arm are moving the weight up and down, all of the muscles of the legs, trunk and upper back are enganged to keep the exerciser steady enough to do the exercise. This is true when ANY exercise is done on a stability ball.
The result is that no exercise is performed without the rest of the muscles of the body getting at least involved, and the benefit of the exercise is that the fitness that is achieved is much more full body than exercises that just isolate muscles. This is perfect for golf because no muscles in the body operate independently of the rest of the body at any point in the golf swing. Everything is always connected, even in putting when the body is still and the arms perform the stroke, the body itself is using its muscles to stay stable. That is why the term stability ball is so appropriate.
