The Sonoma Diet was created by Dr. Connie Gutterson, Ph.D., whose website states in paraphrase, that her time and dedication is toward developing flavorful and nutritious approaches to eating healthy and losing weight. The Sonoma Diet is closely matched to the Mediterranean diet as there is no “diet food” in this particular weight loss system. It’s concept is based on the Meditarranean diet in that it promotes lots of fruits, vegetables, breads, cereals, potatoes, beans, seeds and nuts. It stresses the use of olive oil for cooking, meat such as fish, poultry and very little red meat. It requires the use of a 9 in plate rather than a 12 in plate, a good thing for teaching portion control with fresh ingredients.
Dr. Connie Guttersen provides members with many tasty recipes, which use fresh ingredients. However, these recipes might be best suited for those with gourmet aspirations, than the average run of the mill busy dieter. In this diet a great deal of time is spent deciding on ingredients and in preparing the meals. Similar to other diets, we have reviewed, this one is carried out in phases. But in this diet plan, it is not a quick fix, rather a lifestyle change carried out over a long time period to reach your results and make them last.
Overall, the idea of long term healthy lifestyle changes is what makes this diet plan more effective than many others. On the negative side, it is light on promoting exercise and meal prep time can be time consuming and may require more preparation than used to.
Any good diet plan must have an exercise or activity component to make it successful. A positive is that is promotes healthy lifestyle changes through the use of foods that you can truly enjoy eating, but I don’t think you need a diet to make this happen. I don’t think this plan offers anything new, just another variation of what is out there. You may even notice it completely contradicts the foods offered in the South Beach diet. When choosing a diet plan to follow, look for those that do promote lifestyle changes, healthy foods in correct portion size and will stress exercise as part of the program, that is the only way to truly be successful in achieving total health and fitness.
