We sell a lot of stability balls on our site. The homepage of our site has our model doing a shoulder exercise on a stability ball. These exercise balls get a lot of attention and are now a very common presence in almost any gym, and they have many uses, some of which you may not have heard of before. As a personal trainer online here at LIVE there is not a single member we have that does not have the stability ball as a part of their program.
One of the big uses for the ball is that it allows you to constantly “work the core”, those muscles of the abs and lower back that when tight and shaped look really good in the mirror and feel even better underneath that tight skin. When performing an exercise while seated or laying on a stability ball, these core muscles are forced to kick in to stabilize the body for the exercise. This makes every exercise an “abs exercise,” then! And that is cool because it promotes more results in that area.
Their effectiveness and uses in training go far beyond just the core, however, though that alone is still reason to use one! Another benefit to the ball is that the technique demanded of the whole body to perform exercises on a stability ball makes it much more challenging to perform the exercise with the steadiest form and exercise technique. The result is that the target muscle’s memory for the movement is much more “grooved” in the end than if the same motion was performed on a regular bench or machine. Gains will come much quicker in technique and strength, and the typical non-ball exercises in the gym that are use the same movement (like a shoulder press sitting on a bench rather than a ball) suddenly are so much easier to perform correctly! Results come more quickly. It’s like the stability ball is the perfect weight bench!
