The pomegranate has become the new in fruit. Thanks to Oprah’s pomegranate martinis and the new host of pomegranate juices at the grocery stores. Once dismissed due to its complexity to eat fresh, the pomegranate is loaded with nutrients and its great taste makes it a great fruit to eat. If you want to take a break from the staples of oranges, apples, and bananas than the pomegranate may just be your ticket.
The American pomegranate is grown in the state of California. While I attempted to grow a pomegranate tree in Arizona to no avail though people do. The optimal season to get your pomegranates is between October and January. A fresh and ripe ready to eat pomegranate should be heavy, round, and firm. You want to avoid split pomegranates as that is sign that they are overripe.
Similar to an avocado which we call a super food, a pomegranate is a super fruit. A super food is a food item that is loaded with vitamins and minerals so that every calorie counts for you health. One of the aspects of eating raw fruits is you get the cancer attacking phytochemicals which you can’t get from pills. Pomegranates pack more antioxidant punch than green tea, cranberries, red wine, or grapes. The only antioxidant I know stronger than a pomegranate is xanthohumol, which is only usable in the form of Meridium XN. Pomegranates have been linked to having health benefits that lower the risk of heart disease and high blood pressure.
So you are ready to eat a pomegranate, so what do we do? To open chop off the top and cut the rind in four parts then place in a bowl of cold water. Break parts of the pomegranate away with your hands underwater and remove out the seeds. As the seeds sink to the bottom of the bowl the flesh will float to the top. You eat the seeds as they have a nutrients and a tart taste people enjoy.
Pomegranates can be eaten raw, added to salads, or used for juice. If you don’t want to go through the hassle of preparing one just get them ready to eat from the grocery store. If you want to make a martini out of them you will have to ask Oprah.
