Getting a workout doesn’t always mean you have to go to the gym, or workout from home and use equipment, machines, count reps and document every movement. There are a lot of ways you can add variety, and challenge your body while enjoying the sights, sounds and fresh air of the outdoors. You can also get your professional support from an online trainer instead of going to the gym.
The Biggest Loser aired last night, and the competitors left the gym and headed for the beach for an entire day of workouts. They ran through the sand, did pushup, crab walks, loaded sand in bas and carried them across the beach, they did everything for a great full body workout to help them with weight loss!
If you don’t have the beach nearby, there are many other options for getting in a quality workout away from the gym. Trail running, especially on hilly topography makes for an excellent workout. You might find a running or walking path in your local metro park that has exercise stations built to perform steps, pushups, pull-ups, crunches and other exercises. You can burn through a lot of calories by doing this type of workout!
Another option is to find an open field, such as a high school football field or recreation soccer field. Here you have open space for doing just about anything. Here is a short workout you can do in an open field for toning muscle and burning calories.
• 10 sprints of half the field length (5 at ¾ speed and 5 at full speed)
• Pushups (set of 10-20 at the end of each sprint)
• Lunges (forward and sideways)
• Crunches or toe touches
• Suicides (place 2 objects 20 ft apart and run between them touching each 10 times)
• Medicine ball ( perform overhead throws, side throws, back throws, for a great abs workout)
The options are endless for outdoor workouts. The point is to get a change of pace from your normal routine, especially when the weather is nice, and challenge yourself to do something different. It can be a lot of fun and doesn’t have to feel like work!
