There are so many trainers, working in gym’s, studios, and online too. How do you choose a trainer to workout with? I have seen and heard many horror stories about clients having bad experiences when working with trainers. Your not getting along, you have been through six trainers in a year because they all quit, and they have wandering eyes during a workout. This decision is a big one, you are deciding on building a relationship with a person, trusting them and investing your time and money with them, in the hopes that you will achieve better health and fitness results than you would on our own. So, to improve your chances of having success in this relationship, here are some tips before you get started.
Commit to Yourself
Commit yourself to your results. Be realistic about what you want to accomplish with your trainer, and clearly define your expectations and why you are choosing to invest in one. Commit to the process of getting into shape. This is a relationship, meaning you have to put in just as much work as you would on your own, they can’t do the work for you. If you aren’t willing to commit, you will waste your time and money. Personal trainers are not miracle workers, but they can give you motivation and guidance for better results.
Interview Your Trainer
You need to know your trainer. Their background (experience and education), personality, why they are trainers, what success they have had with clients, how they handle adversity, and what is their training philosophy.
• Background– You should know if they have a degree in a health related field, have good certifications, and have experience. There are many good trainers who didn’t get a health related degree and do have good certifications and skills. But in my experience trainers who have studied exercise physiology, physical therapy, athletic training and others related fields, have more knowledge in how the body works and are better at writing unique program design for an individual.
• Personality– If you find yourself in a personality clash, you won’t have any fun, you’ll be resistant to following the program and eventually will stop coming to appointments. It’s hard to get a good impression of a person by just talking with them for 30 minutes. Ask for a free workout to spend some time with them and get a feel for who they are. It’s much harder to gage this online, but try instant chat or frequent e-mails before committing. I believe that if red flags are present, they’ll pop up early.
• Philosophy– How do they handle different clients? What will they do when you hit a plateau? You want to make sure they are providing a program for you and the goals you want to reach, not the ones they want you to reach.
Have realistic expectations and be ready to make the commitment necessary to achieve results. Have a good understanding of what you want and clearly define realistic goals. The better communication you have with your trainer, the better results you will get. If you decide to workout with the convenience of an online trainer, you’ll want to follow the same steps. Find out who your trainer is and how they will work for you. By being proactive and taking these steps, you can avoid the pitfalls that others may have experienced in the past.
