For many years we have heard the claims on the benefits of taking soy protein. According to Dr. Kaayla T. Daniel soy protein does lower testosterone levels in men. He is a Certified Clinical Nutritionist with a Ph.D. in Nutritional Sciences and Anti-Aging Therapies (anti-aging). He is the current author of the book “The Whole Soy Story.”
According to Dr. Daniel just about every soy product has phytoestrogensis which is linked to reduction in testosterone in men. It has been demonstrated in studies with rats, monkeys, and humans. For men, a reduction in testosterone leads to decreased libido, lower sperm count, and decreases the ability to build muscle. The thyroid is usually affected first, leading to loss of energy, weight gain, depression, lethargy, and a host of other symptoms.
Soy has negative effects for women as well. Women who are eating and drinking large quantities of soy complain of fatigue, depression, hair loss, poor skin, and decrease sex drive. Most are diagnosed with a low thyroid when they see the doctor. Women using soy are at a higher risk of problems with reproductive system, heavier menstrual flow, increased cramping, and infertility.
Soy baby formulas can be dangerous. Based on figures from the Swiss Federal Health Service, Dr. Daniels’ colleagues have estimated that babies taking soy formula are receiving estrogen levels equivalent to 3-5 birth control pills. Which is especially dangerous to infants who need the right hormones at the right times for development.
Healthy people can safely eat several small servings of soy foods per week. The best choices are miso, tempeh, and natto. Tamari soy sauce is also safe to use. Attempt to keep your soy consumption to less than 36 grams per day which is equivalent to what the average consumption is in Japan.
The most obvious choice for people needing to get protein is to use whey. Whey protein is common in the foods we eat and many nutritional products. For those that are lactose intolerant taking whey causes major problems with their GI tract. Jay Robb’s Egg White Protein is all natural and doesn’t contain any dairy or whey. LIVE founder Chuck Carter endorses this protein powder as he is lactose intolerant and that thought soy was good for you. Egg albumen is considered to be the best source of protein and is the main ingredient in Jay Robb Egg White Protein.
