Exercise: Lunge with Balance
Benefits of this exercise for your fitness routine

The lunge to balance is different than a traditional forward lunge only in that it requires a pause at the end of the lunge. The reason for the pause in this exercise is to improve your balance and stability in the ankle, knee and hip. Strength and muscle tone will be enhanced throughout the entire leg including the inner and outer thigh and buttocks.

Lunging to balance requires a balancing surface and there are many options for this. An Exerdisc, or Dynadisc is an excellent tool for providing an unstable surface to complete this exercise. If these aren’t available, consider a pillow or just take off your shoes and lunge in bare feet. Shoes improve stability as an external support, so take them off for training.

For better effectiveness:

Concentrate on controlling the side to side wobble of the knee while completing the lunge.
Keep the abdominals tight by drawing in your naval toward your spine.
Hold the balance portion of the exercise for at least 2 seconds.
