Doing exercise at varying intensities is a great way to increase your metabolism and burn more fat, yet there’s something else we can do that also helps to raise our metabolism; something that’s so simple we can all do it with very little effort. It’s keeping to a regular daily cycle of getting up, eating and sleeping. And it can have incredible results.
In keeping to a regular cycle your body will feel less stressed. Before the advent of artificial light, people would go to bed when it got dark and get up again when it got light. This is the way our bodies are designed to work and when we keep to a regular cycle our body is better able to work at its optimal level. And when we are functioning at our peak, we will burn energy more effectively.
Regular food intake is also very important to a good metabolism. When you wake up in the morning your body needs to be fed. You have effectively been fasting while you’ve been sleeping and once you’re awake your body wants to break that fast (hence, breakfast) and get some fuel to get it going for the day. Once you’ve eaten, your body will start burning more energy, including fat. Breakfast should be the first of five small meals that you eat throughout the day. Eating five meals rather than three keeps your body supplied with fuel right through the day and helps to avoid highs and lows in your blood sugar levels. If you sleep late your body won’t get the fuel it needs when it’s expecting it and this will throw your biorhythms out. Without energy to burn, your metabolism will be slow. This is why we feel tired and slow when we oversleep.
So simply keeping to a regular routine of getting up and going to bed at the same time each day, and eating regular meals, can have great benefits for your overall health. And it’s something that’s just so easy to do.
